If I Can Do It, So Can You!

Growing up we were taught that the normal cycle of life is to get a degree, get a job, get married, have kids and live in a perfect community and that’s it. But how has that played out for you? I’m pretty sure the answer is “not too well” and you are not alone in this because I used to belong to that school of thought before I decided to take my life back.

Ever since I started working, I have always leaned towards the 9–5 routine lifestyle that drained me mentally, emotionally and physically because I had to take long commutes into the city and work long hours. I had to wake up pretty early, which was always a drag and I also had to put my son in before and after school care, which meant I didn’t see him for more than 11 hours in a day. I barely had time for myself and less for my family. I was unhappy, unfulfilled and I knew I had to make a change and guess what? I did!

It wasn’t easy to just wake up one morning and quit my job but I knew deep down that I had to because I knew I needed something more, more time to spend with my family and kids and I wanted to do something that would make me more fulfilled. My passion has always been to help others succeed.

I recently took a leap of faith into the world of freelancing and founded my own consulting agency www.jpriceconsulting.com against all odds, and the reception has been amazing, even better than I expected. I have worked with and spoken to a lot of small business owners where I have been able to cultivate relationships that have helped me build my business and get a better life for my family and I.

But today things have changed for me as I am now a full-time freelancer, who is doing what she loves and knows how to do best. So why can’t you do the same? A recent study that was carried out showed that 68 percent of people who work as freelancers have a better quality of life ever since they became independent because they now live their lives on their own terms and conditions.

Working independently gives you room to work on your terms from anywhere in the world. For instance, I can decide to hit the gym at any time of the day or go on a play date with my adorable kids and still meet the needs of my clients because I work on my own terms and time. This has not stopped me from adding value to businesses that are all around me and from all over the world and I don’t have to answer to anyone (except my amazing clients of course). So why can’t you do the same?

Yes, working as a freelancer comes with a lot of drawbacks because you don’t have a regular stream of income and you might have dry spells (days when you don’t get clients). But I feel like this compensates for the fact that I work from home, which gives me enough room to take care of my kids without spending loads of money on daycare, as well as saving money on gas for travel and time on commuting, not to mention I am active in the life of my kids, which is priceless. So why can’t you do the same?

I’m a business woman who is on a mission to live her life like she wants and adding value to the lives of people around her because I decided one day that I was going to live by these words “your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to do what you love” Steve Jobs.

I believe in the saying that if you don’t build your own dreams, someone will hire you to build theirs. So don’t be afraid to take that step if you truly believe in yourself because if you don’t believe in yourself, no one will.

Take your life back and be all that you can be and if you need a hand, I’ll be here to help you through it all.

I am Jodi and I live life on my own terms!
