This kind of binary, exclusionary thinking is entirely understandable — but it is unhelpful. There is no inside versus outside the academy. Instead what is happening is a series of parallel, interacting processes of social learning and cultural evolution.

For example, in every academic field there has been advancement of systemic thinking for more than half a century now. Much has been learned (and translated) into social change efforts. Most social change practitioners today have college educations. Many feedbacks and couplings exist in this knowledge ecology that can be reconfigured for new capabilities.

I don’t see inside/outside distinctions as particularly helpful in times as disruptive as these. ;-)
