Day 04: “I’m Less Dead”

[7 Nov 2019] Kind of better, since I can breath and don’t feel like total garbage. I’ll see how I feel later.

Day 03: “I’m Dead”

[6 Nov 2019] Seriously. I haven’t been this sick in a while. I’m just going to lay in bed all day and hopefully feel better.

Activity:

  • Coughing
  • Suffering

Stats:

  • I can’t get out of bed, so let’s say no change.

Day 02.5: "…And I’m Sick”

[5 Nov 2019] Well, this is super annoying. I’m not sure if it’s allergies or a cold. I was planning on going to BJJ, but that’s a pretty inconsiderate thing to do if you even suspect you’re sick. Depending on how I feel later, I’ll do some additional stretching or a restorative yoga video off youtube. The key thing at times like this is to take care of yourself. There’s no sense in pushing through illness or injury — short-term gain, long-term loss.

Day 02: “Yoga is Hard”

[5 Nov 2019] 6am class at Black Swan Westgate again. It’s interesting how much variation there is depending on the instructor. I really liked this class, but it was definitely more challenging. I have a habit of overdoing things so I’m trying to pace myself. One of the toughest parts is really staying present an conscious of your breath. I constantly found myself holding my breath or straining. It’s kind of an active mindfulness exercise. Pretty cool.

Activity:

  • Yoga: BSY @ 6am

Stats:

  • Weight: 209.4 lbs (-4.6)
  • Streak: 2

Day 01: “Day 1 is Always Easy”

[4 Nov 2019] I hit the 6am class at Black Swan Westgate. It was pretty good. Wow, did the asymmetry in my body from BJJ really make itself known. Overall, I feel great, alert, and I’m thinking this will be a positive habit. I’ve always enjoyed how yoga made me feel, but I really have trouble sticking with anything that’s not BJJ. Ideally, doing this consistently for 30 days will make it a habit.

BJJ was awesome as usual. Tonight I had the rare pleasure of being choked unconscious. It happens. As a side note, Gabriel’s clock choke is no joke.

Activity:

  • Yoga: BSY @ 6am
  • BJJ: Integração @ 6:30pm

Stats:

  • Weight: 214 lbs
  • Streak: 1

P.S. I really appreciate all the encouragement and positive feedback I’ve received.

Day 00: “The Idea”

[3 Nov 2019] I’ve lost over 100 pounds since 2009. At my most majestic/obese, I hit 333 lbs. I’ve done pretty well maintaining, but typically hit long plateaus that I need to push through. This is one of those times. I’d like to get to one-derland (< 200 lbs). The idea here is to increase my activity level and see what I can accomplish in 30 days. 6 days per week I’ll be doing 2 of 3 activities, and have one rest day where I’ll just do one. I’m keeping a log here to keep myself accountable, and to capture some thoughts and stats each day.

I’ve decided to start each day with yoga. The main reason is to improve overall flexibility and longevity for jiu-jitsu.

Example schedule:

  • Mon: Yoga, BJJ
  • Tue: Yoga, CrossFit
  • Wed: Yoga, BJJ
  • Thu: Yoga, CrossFit
  • Fri: Yoga, BJJ
  • Sat: Yoga, BJJ
  • Sun: Yoga

In addition, I’ll be cutting out junk food. For me, that’s sticking to a vegan diet that only includes food that doesn’t come out of a cardboard box, isn’t fried, and sensible portions.
