How it Feels to Be Held at Gunpoint by Your Police Officers

Your words are truly powerful and riveting, but we must look beyond race to see where the problem really lies. We are essentially giving individuals who barely graduated high school, many who are coming off military tours and have experienced war first hand, the power to exact instant death sentences on whomever they wish.

I too, have wept for Tamir Rice (disclaimer: I am white, with some Hispanic heritage), who was gunned down in a matter of seconds without giving him a chance. Or John Crawford, who was gunned down by a rogue cop at a Walmart for the horrible crime of trying to buy a BB gun.

But I also weep for Daniel Shaver, a white father of two who was gunned down by a trigger happy cop whose crime was nothing more than drinking with some buddies while inspecting pest control equipment in a hotel room.

Or Ethan Saylor, a kid with down syndrome who was choked to death by police because his mother didn’t arrive in time enough to calm him down in the face of aggressive police officers.

Or Sureshbhai Patel, and Indian immigrant who was brutally assaulted by police because “he didn’t speak the language.” The cop was actually charged, but quickly acquitted. Justice, right?

I am with you trying to defend these victims, against an angry mob of police sympathizers on comment boards where I am usually outnumbered. “They deserved it,” they tell me, mercilessly downvoting me. “Next time don’t carry a BB gun in a WalMart,” or “Shut up and obey the law!”

Until we stand together to face this evil that continues to persist in our communities, it will continue, or get worse.
