self driving cars mixed on regular roads with human drivers are a techno geek fantasy. The real world is full of chaotic and random events as simple as a truck splashing mud on your self driving cars sensor to icy roads with snowplow berms, and much much more. If you think there are enough sensors or algorithms to make this type of operation safe then you are living in a dream world. The main beneficiaries of self driving cars where the occupants are busy in their new mobile office, doing work, and not paying any attention, will the the lawyers. Lawyers and class action lawsuits suing car manufacturers and owners will be the real legacy. This does not hold as much for self driving cars on dedicated and protected lanes, but few cities could afford this for minor benefits achieved. My background? Aerospace engineering using sensors, actuators and of course, algorithms.
