Why Its Not All About You

Marketers seemingly forget that the only thing that really matters is the customer.

Whats In It For Me?

Humans put ourselves first, its what we do and we can’t help it. We like to think that we give, when in reality its all about yours truly.

So, if the general man in the street is thinking about himself, what he wants to drink, what he wants to eat, what interests him, why exactly do most businesses on the planet market their brand and therefore products in the same way?

I genuinely can’t believe that we are still having to write about this in 2014. I ask myself the same question most days — “Will business really all embrace the 1 to 1 marketing engagement and content strategies that are proving so successful for the early adopters?

Or will they merely give up when the going gets too tough for them?

By making it about the customer, you’re quickly making them feel comfortable around you. Increasing the acceptance of your marketing hustle.

Listen to the customer — they’re right even if you can’t accept it

Over the past year, the ability to listen to your customers on social media has gone through the roof. Tools like Radian6 allow you to segment your customers and learn from them what they expect from you.

You should tailor your content to suit their needs and even structure new products around them.

Remember — Without your customers you have nothing!

Okay, so thats rant over for me and I hope that large businesses can really learn from what the small start-ups are doing so well. Maybe its because they’re so agile, although don’t have the budget you big guys have.

Let’s make 2014 the year marketing changes for good and digital practices are taken as seriously as the proven unsuccessful offline brethren.
