Put a Sock In It!

Five weeks ago I decided to take a a journey into the world of Men’s fashion. I dove straight to the deepest most unexplored depths of the industry, fashionable socks. I have learned more than I could have ever imagined about the industry in such a short amount of time. I have become completely immersed, and I love it.

People are wild about their equally as wild socks. Working on this project I have gotten the opportunity to speak to sock connoisseurs from around the country such as national news anchors and CEO’s of some businesses within the industry. I learned that the industry credits George H.W. Bush for the uprising in the fashion trend, and it is a three to five BILLION dollar industry that is growing by around 20% each year. It’s only been an industry for about four years.

Through this project, I actually was given the opportunity to design my own sock. The “Dietrich” will be available for purchase late July.

In addition, I learned a lot about how to connect with people during this project. I knew almost all of the technical abilities needed to complete this project before the class started, but something I did not is how to make people feel. My partner and I have been filming videos and taking photos for a month now, and as of last week we scrapped almost everything we had done. We had lost our original vision.

The mission of our project is to sell people on the culture of fashionable socks. We had thought the best way to do this was to take videos and pictures of socks in cool places, but that is not what people will connect with. We realized we need to show cool people being happy, while wearing cool socks.

That’s when we realized, we aren’t just selling socks. We are selling happiness.
