Focus on Thoughts Consistent with Your Values
Whether we are trying to improve at basketball, yoga, or calligraphy, we strengthen what we practice. What kind of thoughts have you been practicing? A torrent of thoughts pass through our mind each day- some consistent with our spirit and some of them, like our dreams at night, random and not consistent with our spirit. Our peace of mind depends, therefore, on the thoughts that we give our attention. If a thought passes through our consciousness that we realize is negative and judgmental, we can let it crumble and pay no further attention to it. It was not consistent with our values, so we allow it to pas right through. If a thought is violent or divisive, we pay zero attention because we know that type of negative thinking is damaging to our physical and mental health. When we want to remain healthy, we will concentrate on positive thoughts and positive aspects of life (and there are many). When our thoughts are positive and joyful and uplifting and encouraging, we realize they are consistent with our values and resonate positively in our souls and so we can them our attention and absorb them. These thoughts lead to better health and happier days.
