Groundwater is an important resource in Agriculture. Ground water can provide a reliable and consistent supply of water for crops and livestock.
Some of the main causes of groundwater pollution in Nigeria include excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, improper management of animal manure and wastewater, overexploitation of groundwater for irrigation and other purposes, erosion of soil and sediments by runoff, excessive irrigation, oil spills, mining and quarrying, and waste disposal and management.

Groundwater pollution in Nigeria significantly affects agriculture, causing soil infertility through salinization, contaminating crops with harmful substances, posing health risks to livestock, and ultimately resulting in reduced crop yields. The implications extend beyond compromised food safety to impact national food security and export potential.

To address the prevention of groundwater pollution in Nigeria's agriculture, it is crucial to implement sustainable practices. This involves the use of organic farming methods that reduce the dependence on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, judicious use of fertilizers and pesticides, optimal irrigation, adopting proper management techniques for animal manure and wastewater, and minimal exploitation of groundwater for agricultural purposes. Additionally, erosion control measures to mitigate runoff and stringent regulations on oil spills, mining, and waste disposal are imperative.

In summary, it is essential to adopt these measures to guarantee the sustainability of agriculture in Nigeria.
