Typically you’d have other tasks running on the worker tier app also that may justify keeping it alive 24/7, but you could do time based rules to start and stop the instances if you are just using it for cron tasks.

I actually use Lambda now for most worker processes. The time limit on Lambda functions is 5 minutes not 30 seconds, although you’ll pay considerably more for the privilege of a 5 minute timeout on your function.

I’d recommend most to look at scheduled Lambda functions as an alternative to cron on worker tier elastic beanstalk apps these days.
