Opinions, Opinions, Opinions.
Opinion- what someone thinks about a particular thing.
There you have it. The definition of “opinion." Yet for the last couple of years, people have become so sensitive to the world that it has reached a point where I can’t say what I think or feel about something.
Let’s go to one of the categories that is a part of our lives, one I happen to have a particular taste in when it comes to opinions: music.
Music is, undoubtedly, the best thing ever created for the human ears. But people take music so seriously. Why?
I was born in the last 2 years (1998) of Generation Y (1981-2000). I grew up listening to mainstream music. Jay-Z, 50 Cent (thanks to my uncle), Eminem, Beyonce, you name it. But in my younger years, I listened to more Hispanic music like Bachata (Frank Reyes, Antony Santos, Aventura) and Reggaeton (Wisin & Yandel, Rakim & Ken-Y, Daddy Yankee). So I’m a mixed consumer of music. I listened to Hip Hop when I wanted raw lyrics or when I wanted to feel like a kid from the hood, and I listened to Hispanic music when I wanted to be lit. Dancing with my family and singing, you know what I mean?
Now, enter Generation Z (2001-present) and we have a plethora of artists from both sides of the spectrum. We have Lil Wayne, Drake, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Adele, Demi Lovato, Lady GaGa, Future, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, A Boogie, I can go on and on and on.
In today’s society, you get roasted for disliking Kendrick Lamar or liking Lil Yachty. Why should it be like that? That’s their own opinion. If they don’t like Kendrick, that’s their opinion. If Drake is the best artist of this generation, that’s their opinion. People have different tastes in music, so for you to say “Nigga, you wack” when I say Drake’s the best artist of this generation, is pointless to my taste in music. How would society be like if we all liked and disliked the same artists? How brainwashed would we be?
Personally speaking, I like music that
A. Has a good beat to it
B. Has a nice sound/flow to it
C. Makes me lit as hell
D. Makes me want to sing the entire song in the shower.
Drake, hands down, hits all the spots, along with a few other artists. Others may have different preferences in their music, that’s why I don’t even join any debates on “who’s the best” because it doesn’t matter. Music is meant to be heard and understood, not debated (unless it’s beef between artists of course).
These new artists that are coming out, like A Boogie and the likes, are meant for Generation Z, not X like most of us 18-21 year olds. But if you happen to like them, then by all means, do you. The past artists, legends, as most would say, should stay in their place. You’ve done your job in the music industry. They sometimes like to make music that happen to appeal to the wrong generation, a generation that is flourishing with people that have Future and Drake as their main artists. Your presence is gladly welcome to the generation in which you made music for, there’s no doubt about that, but don’t interrupt the evolution of music we’re currently going through.
