Malus sieversii (Apple Tree)
A villanelle poem
We two trees that stand a foot apart;
Blackberry bushes mimic how our roots have grown,
Let us share the earth as our beating heart.
Winters breath gnaws our yearning russet bark,
Robins dance between our branches topped in snow,
We two trees that stand a foot apart.
Our blossom punches with an aromatic blast,
the whims of the wind clears our clotted boughs,
Let us share the earth as our beating heart.
Paired in place like two lungs planted fast,
Beneath one sun; for whom our verdure glows.
We two trees that stand a foot apart.
We draw closer with each yearly ring we’ve past:
Thickened trunks soaked in a love that slowly grows,
Let us share the earth as our beating heart.
Married to the seasons; embedded never to depart,
We two trees that stand a foot apart;
Waxing flora and soaring fauna drawn within our cart,
Let us share the earth as our beating heart.
