Now, unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you are likely to have heard at least something about the new upcoming Star Wars film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The new film is due for release this December and early indications are that we can expect it to be a little different from what we are used to. Being the first big film spin off from the Star Wars saga has naturally generated a little confusion around Rogue One for people who perhaps don’t worship at the alter of the Force.
The amount of times I, and I’m sure many Star Wars fans, have had to explain where and when Rogue One takes place in the Star Wars universe is bordering on the absurd. So to help deal with this particular problem I have recorded a short and frustrated video that I will be pushing into the faces of all who need reminding that Rogue One is most definitely not a continuation of The Force Awakens.
So, now this is out of the way let’s begin speculating wildly about what we might be able to expect from Rogue One.
Something that has really struck me from the teaser and official trailer so far is how much darker this film seems compared to the others. The imagery is very gritty and war like, the soundtrack is very foreboding, and the whole thing just has a very serious atmosphere. If the aim of this first spin off is take Star Wars in a new and interesting direction then I think we are in for a treat.
From a storytelling perspective I think it’s very interesting, at least from what we have seen so far, that this film revolves much more around an event rather than relying on established characters and their development. Bringing in new faces to tell a new story, in a well established setting, gives the writers a lot of freedom to create and try different things without losing it’s essence as a Star Wars film. I hope that we can expect to meet new characters that don’t rely on the same kinds of archetypes established by characters in the Star Wars universe.
I shouldn’t speculate too much because the last thing I would want to do is spoil myself by going to see the film with too many expectations and then having those dashed. Having said that, I am uncharacteristically confident that Rogue One is going to kick all kinds of ass. Star Wars needs a serious side and I think with this film we are going to get that.
We get a whole new set of space babes, terrifying villains, a high stakes mission, sexy space triangles, lots of explosions, martial arts, the galaxy’s most deadly Christmas ornament, and Darth Vader is even going to put in an appearance. This is worth getting VERY EXCITED about and there is no way in hell I am going to miss this party.
