How To Get Over Writer’s Block

I recently dealt with a long streak of writer’s block. Here are something things that helped me get over it.

Read

If writing is like driving a car — then reading is like fueling up.

Sure you can write & write & write just like you can drive & drive & drive without stopping. You might be able to run on fumes for a while, but eventually you’re gonna have to refuel.

You are not a Prius.

Pick up a new book (or a favorite) & get back to reading. Remind yourself of great stories & great authors. Then pick up your pen or laptop & get back to work.

Do Something

Finding it hard to tell a good story? Get out of your head & start living a good story with your life. I’ve found again & again that the best writers often have something to base their writing off. If you’re having trouble writing — get out of your own stupid head & start living. Cross something off your list & tell a good story. You’ll find it starts getting much easier to write.

Create Limits

There’s freedom found in limits. If you’re having trouble writing, you might be aiming too broad. Focus more & create an artificial limit in which to create your work.

Compare these two prompts

Write about history.

Write 1000 words on the creation of the declaration of independence.

Which ones is easier to write about?

Limits give you direction. If you’re having trouble writing something, you might need to be more direct with what you’re writing about.

Here are some ideas:

Only write list posts.

Only write about fitness.

Make every post exactly 642 words

Find a photo and write a story about it.

Write only in haikus

Make up fake rules surrounding your writing. It doesn’t matter how ridiculous they are (the crazier, the better) and then focus all your writing efforts around those new regulations.

Create A Better Writing Environment

Create a better writing program to help get words on the page? Check out these. Need some good tunes? Check out these. Section yourself off into a writing environment that’s conducive to being creative & then just…

Effin’ Write

Words aren’t going to show up on paper until you put them there. Sit down, put on some writing music, and pump out some words. Use brute force and get to it.

Want to be a writer? Well writers write — even when you’re stuck.
