Barabbas and the dangers of following the crowd
“Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, “Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!”” Luke 23:18 NLT
We live in a time where the crowd rules the day.
If everyone else is doing it, then it must be right. If the majority is saying it, then it must be right.
If the majority feels it is ok to be homosexual then it surely must be ok. If divorce is common, then it must be abnormal to remain faithful to one person for life.
One of the most fascinating details of the story of Calvary is that of Barabbas. Put next to Jesus, there was no comparison. Jesus healed, Barabbas killed. Jesus was the Prince of Peace, Barabbas was the culprit of insurrection.
One had a message of love. The other a message of hate and violence. Yet, in the midst of glaring contrast, the crowd adamantly chose against the Messiah.
This is still happening today. The crowd is choosing the opposite of Christ. They are choosing wicked celebrities. They are choosing twisted politicians. They are choosing anything that contradicts the goodness of God’s love. They are choosing anything that appeals to their base and carnal appetites.
Takeaway: Have you fallen prey to the pull of the crowd? Have you compromised your beliefs because you just wanted to fit in with the “norm”? I encourage you today to stand strong in the faith you received at salvation. I encourage you go against the grain of the crowd and live for Jesus no matter what the standards of the day may scream.
