Criticism & Correction, the rails to success?
“If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.” Proverbs 13:18 NLT
I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone, I mean anyone, who liked to receive criticism or correction. There is something about those two words that just sends shivers up your spine at the very sight of them. Yet, in order to achieve real recognition and honor in life you have to become someone who is an expert at receiving both.
When we speak of criticism, we are definitely talking about constructive criticism. Even destructive criticism can play a positive role in “toughening you up.”
Nowadays, all criticism is labeled bad and shunned as wrong and offensive.
This protects people from putting their ideas to the test with people of all backgrounds and beliefs. This is why many today have become very delusional and self-centered.
They have not heard any valid criticism in so long they are simply left up to the voices in their head to determine truth, morality, and even best practices.
Correction in my mind almost always goes with getting a whippin’ or being told to stop doing something. As an adult, nothing can get under my skin like another adult correcting me for something that I don’t feel is wrong or should not be “against the rules.”
This natural bend against correction is normal and, if allowed to persist, will sabotage every good thing in your life.
Many have falsely thought that if they found the right person, they would’t mind receiving correction. Wrong! This is easily the #1 excuse for never allowing anyone in your life who can point out a better way.
Takeaway: Have you resisted and even rejected these two words? Have you seen the result promised by Solomon for those who do not embrace these two difficult words? What areas of your life could you be more open to criticism or correction?
