How to Avoid Suppressing the Truth

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” Romans‬ ‭1:18‬ ‭ESV

What keeps people from seeing the truth? Why do some see more and more of God’s unchanging truth and receive more and more freedom while others seem to stumble into further deception leading to bondage? The simple answer is found in our verse for today.

Willful unrighteousness literally suppresses the truth!

Just as a cough suppressant masks the symptoms of a cold, so unrighteousness suppresses the ability of the truth to shine forth and bring liberty. This is a scary lesson on the power God has given to the human will. He will not trespass it. Satan cannot overpower it.

Only man can freely give himself to righteousness and life or unrighteousness and death.

Moses said in Deuteronomy, “Choose today between life and death, blessing or cursing.” The power is in the will! If you choose against Christ and His Word you will literally suppress or make nonexistent the truth.

If you choose Christ and obedience to His Word you will unveil the life-giving truth.

Takeaway: Have you willfully chosen to suppress the truth in any area of your life by choosing unrighteousness? Will you examine your heart today and ask the Holy Spirit to point out any willful unrighteousness that may be suppressing the truth?

Greater freedom can be yours today by choosing righteousness!
