Is it Time for Jesus to make another whip?
Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. John 2:15 NLT
This is a picture that makes the religious crowd very uncomfortable and causes the “love” crew to cringe. Jesus, our Savior and Lord, getting so fired up and passionate that he actually made a whip! And no, not the slang type of whip that we call cars now. An actual whip that could do some major damage. With this whip, our Christ literally cleared out the Temple. What a picture!
What is happening in the church now that would cause the Lord to make another whip?
The peddling of goods and soliciting of funds for the sake of causes that are not Kingdom. Some are blatant attempts to line the pockets of a select few with the precious little resources of the aged and simple at heart. To take advantage of anyone is a great injustice in the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, “If you cause one of these “little ones” to stumble, it would be better for you to have a millstone tied around your neck and be case into the sea.” That is the same passion as the indignation that precipitated the Son of God to make a whip and clear the Temple!
We need a fresh cleansing of the commercialization of the Gospel.
This doesn’t mean that tithing, giving, and making resources of value available to the Body of Christ is wrong. Far from it! But like anything good that God created, the enemy has perverted the good thing to become something never intended.
Endless fundraisers, begging for money, manipulating people using Scripture incorrectly, and promising things never intended from God’s Word are all things that grieve the heart of Jesus today in the same way it did when he cleansed the Temple 2000 years ago.
Takeaway: Can you picture Jesus with a whip in His hand? Do you know the Savior in that manner? Have you ever felt zeal in your heart to protect the name of Christ? Have you seen injustice in the church concerning mishandling of funds or manipulation of God’s people? I encourage you today to embrace every part of Christ revealed in Scripture. Don’t pick and choose the attributes you like or feel good about. He is a God of holy zeal!
