Learning to Rest
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29 ESV
Sleeping is part of rest but rest is far more than sleeping.
It sounds very simple, but in reality learning to rest is one of the hardest things you must learn in this day of busyness.
The Lord has really been speaking to me lately about taking my rest to a higher level. If you are anything like me, you are always pushing the envelope to see how much can get done in the least amount of time.
Learning to rest means becoming intentional about downtime.
Recognizing that your greatest contribution to the Kingdom or productivity in the workforce will come when you have time that is set apart for simply resting.
This is demonstrated so clearly in the Bible by the idea of the Sabbath… one day a week where you do absolutely nothing. For some reason, this is just so hard to do!
Jesus tells us in this verse that we should find rest in Him. Though we are commissioned to do the work of the Kingdom, we are also given the power and grace to find rest in our body, soul, and spirit.
Takeaway: Are you getting the rest that you need?
Do you get enough sleep each night? Do you take at least one day off each week and truly relax? Do you take vacation time and really detach from everything in your life? Look to Jesus today for the true rest that can only come by trusting in Him and living a life of real faith in Christ.
