The Dangers of Drink
“For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper.” Proverbs 23:32 NLT
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, warns of the dangers of alcohol.
He doesn’t declare it a sin or say it is an abomination, but he clearly discourages us from taking strong drink. His main point is articulated in our verse for today by stating the end is the most dangerous aspect of drinking. It can start small and harmless, and this is exactly what the devil wants!
You may be someone who has no qualms with drinking wine or beer. I would like to challenge you today to think about this verse.
There is a reason Solomon warns against strong drink. There is a reason the Holy Spirit put this in the Word of God!
It is for our good and not to control us. It is to protect us and not to harm us!
Think about the first mention of wine in the Bible. Was it positive? Was it good? Was it initiated by God? NO! It was when Noah got drunk and was laying naked in his tent. It was the scene of an awful generational curse that plagued God’s chosen people throughout the Old Testament. Selah!
Have you thought about the door of opportunity that you may be opening to the enemy by dabbling with strong drink?
Has it already become a poisonous snake to you? Have you already been bitten by its evil intention? Nothing good comes from losing control. We are actually called to go beyond our own natural control and have the self-control of the Spirit. I’ve not come today to condemn but to warn. Be very careful when treading into these waters. Many men and women of God have been shipwrecked over the allure of strong drink. Read Prov. 23:29–35 and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart.
