What to do when you are in the “Depths of Despair”
“But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the LORD alone.” Jonah 2:9 NLT
Jonah was in the place that many men and women of God have been over the centuries. I have been there many occasions myself. A place of out right despair. Whether it is from physical suffering or your heart is breaking over a relationship, there seems to be points in all of our lives where we are in the depths of despair.
What do you do from the place of agony and suffering? The answer to this question is extremely counterintuitive!
The answer is to sing a song of praise. The last thing you feel like doing is singing. The thing you want to do most is cry or curl up in a ball in the corner somewhere until things have gotten better. The problem is, they don’t get better until we put our eyes on Jesus! He is the only one who provides the answer to every problem. Even if our immediate cause of suffering is not alleviated, Jesus gives us the grace to face any adversity and the promise of eternal life forever. He is the answer!
Takeaway: do you find yourself in a place of despair today? Does everything inside of you resist singing a song of praise?
