Why do We Ignore Correction?
“If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.” Proverbs 13:18 NLT
Who wouldn’t just simply embrace correction and then reap the guaranteed benefit of being honored? Just about no one!
Why is it that we ignore or even despise the one thing that will most definitely bring us to the place of being honored? It is our pride, ego, and rebellious, fallen nature.
I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like to be corrected!
When the stewardess tells me to turn off my phone or someone honks at me for a driving violation that is clearly my fault, something in me gets mad and offended. Even worse, when someone who loves me and has my best at heart tells me something of a corrective nature, why is it that instead of being thankful and changing immediately I bow up on the inside and get defensive? I may be preaching to the choir today (or myself) but we could all learn a huge lesson from this little power-packed verse. In fact, we should go as far as to look longingly for correction!
Takeaway: How have you ignored or rejected correction in your life? Is it too late to go back and receive it? Who do you have in your life that can correct you and you will receive it?
True covering under spiritual authority is when someone can literally override your reasonings and preferences and prevail with a correction that is for your good.
Remember, no child ever wanted their parent to spank them in the moment but was sure thankful later in life to not have the police shore up their correction deficiency!
