Why Does the Lord Hide?
“Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” Psalms 10:1 ESV
Have you ever been in a dire situation and felt like the Lord was nowhere to be found?
Have you ever cried out for help in a moment of despair and felt as if the heavens were brass? Well, join the club!
All of the great men of God in the Old Testament felt the same way from time to time. In this verse, David was articulating this exact emotion. He then goes on to explain that the Lord hides Himself in order to expose the heart of man. If God were present at every moment, we would never have any reason to doubt his judgment. It would require no faith to serve him. But because he hides himself in certain moments, we simply have to except his presence by faith and not because we can feel or see him at all times.
People who choose to live their life in sin and wickedness never seem to really feel the presence of God and thus feel secure in their wickedness. Those of us who are walking in righteousness must not make the same mistake as those who are wicked.
Just because there are times where we do not feel his presence doesn’t mean that he is not there.
By faith we reach for him in all situations and know that he hears and answers our prayers.
Takeaway: has doubt crept into your heart about the Lord because he failed to seem present in the midst of a great trial in your life? Is there bitterness in your heart because it seemed like the Lord was not there when you needed him the most? Do not fall prey to the lie of the enemy that would tell you that the Lord is not there to hear your request. Keep believing by faith that God is an ever present help in time of trouble.
