7 Inspiring Ways to Train Yourself Become More Creative

Anyone who works on artistic projects knows that a steady, useful creative thinking just doesn’t come along by chance. Although seen as a talent, it is believed that you can “train” yourself to be more creative.

Famous writers, painters and musicians for example, have some sort of “rituals” that allow their amazing ideas to flow.

You can develop certain processes or little routines that will enhance your environment to favor your imaginative skills and inspiration.

1. Never stop writing.

Even if your creative field isn’t related to content creation, writing is an excellent way to store your thoughts, perspectives and inspired moments. People usually write to let their feelings come out, regardless of whether it is for an audience or not, and it turns out to be very helpful. Many professionals keep journals to capture all those things that cross their minds or drafts of what they want to do with their projects. This practice brings incredible clarity and helps you organize ideas.

2. Retrospection.

Highly recognized professionals (like political campaign directors) use this exercise to evaluate their work. When you finalize a project (or a stage of a big project) it is always good to take some time afterwards and reflect on it. How did you feel about the project? Did you like the way it went? What do you think was done right? Where do you feel you went wrong? Answering these questions will give you the key to improvement. You will have new and better ideas to try as a product of self-assessment.

3. Find a constant source of inspiration.

Your creativity needs to be nurtured by letting yourself be inspired all the time. You just need to find a source you can feed constantly. Some people use “tear sheets” or pieces cut from magazines and newspapers with nice designs or ideas. Others subscribe to photography or creative design blogs to see what others are doing and get inspired by what worked well for them. You can also buy art books, from old paintings to modern home design and review the different tendencies that have emerged over time. It doesn’t matter what discipline you choose, bold visuals and sounds are always a source of inspiration to adapt to your own work.

4. Take breaks and rest.

When you are working, it’s essential that you can measure your own capacity and avoid reaching a point of getting frustrated or stuck. Once you have overworked yourself it’s hard to produce anything useful. Sometimes a nap works wonders for you. Make sure you take breaks when needed and rest if you are too tired. Take this as something where you need to be discipline: don’t compromise your rest or sleep for other things or you won’t have the ideal energy levels to focus on work.

5. Go outside.

It can be as simple as walking out of the building to take a walk or going to a park; or as big as taking a trip on your next vacation. Getting out of your usual work area is like pressing a “restart” button for your mind. But when you are out, make sure you are really out.

Disconnect from everything related to your assignments. Enjoy a relaxing time alone or with others. When you come back to work your energy will be incredibly positive and productive to dive into your projects.

6. Morphological Synthesis.

This is a good strategy to have different views of a creation and think of variations that could improve it. If you take a product or creation and break it down into its different components, you might have a better perspective of how modifying some of the components could give a boost to the entire invention. How would it be if one of its qualities were exaggerated in any way? What if you decided to take something away or replace it? This practice will open your mind to versions of your own creations that you hadn’t imagined before.

7. Envision what your projects will become.

Have you thought how far you want your ideas to go? How do you want others to remember you and your creations? Try to visualize the future of your projects like it were a reality. This will help you clarify where you want to go and what you need to do to actually get there. Are you starting an innovative company? Envision what people will think of it. How they will benefit from it in the future. New ideas will pop up constantly to get you closer to that vision and leave something of value to the world.
