Are KIND Bars Black Tie Candy?

I’m just gonna say it — Kind Bars are not healthy.

They aren’t.

I get it: they contain nuts and fruit (and sometimes dark chocolate), they’re a source of protein and antioxidants, they’re low in sodium and have zero trans fats. Plus, they say “healthy” on the label.

The FDA apparently has a problem with that last part.

The Food and Drug Agency sent a warning letter in March 2015 to Kind informing it that four of its products — Fruit & Nut Almond & Apricot, Fruit & Nut Almond & Coconut, Plus Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate + Protein and Fruit & Nut Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew — “do not meet the requirements for use of the nutrient content claim ‘healthy’ on a food label.”

If the FDA, who are usually the last people to figure anything out, say that it isn’t healthy, then I definitely know something is up.

Here’s the truth. Kind Bars are dressed up candy bars.

Before you send me back some hate mail, this is not an arbitrary conclusion. The nutrition facts don’t lie. Kind Bars have blaring similarities to candy bars.

Here’s a kind Breakfast Bar.

Contrary to the wrapper claims of health, it has very similar nutrition facts as a Pay Day Candy Bar.

Let summarize:

A comparison of a Kind Bar and Pay Day, side by side

I’m no scientist, but it looks pretty damn similar.

Now — I know what you might be thinking. What about the quality of the ingredients??

The reality is:

Both Kind Bars and PayDay are made in a manufacturing facility.

Both are business that are run for profit.

Both will use similar ingredients with nominal differences.

These are the ingredients in a PayDay:

Peanuts, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Nonfat Milk, Palm Oil, Contains 2%,or Less of: Salt,Carrageenan, Mono- and Diglycerides, Egg Whites, Soy Protein.

These are the ingredients in a Kind Bar:

Whole grain blend (oats, brown rice, millet, oat flour, buckwheat, amaranth, quinoa), dried cane syrup, honey, tapioca syrup, peanut butter, canola oil, peanuts, chocolate liquor, sugar, brown rice syrup, gum acacia, peanut flour, sea salt, vanilla extract, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, water, Vitamin E

Again, let’s summarize the major ingredient categories:

Are you catching my drift?

The differences on the surface seem blaring. But underneath the hood, these items are pretty damn similar.
