The Sidekick: And Take Ten
Everybody needs a break, a moment to step away, take a breath, or even go outside for the almost forgotten smoke break. Nobody can work 24/7, not even heroes, parents and service personnel. No matter how hard they try, the human body just doesn’t work that way. Sidekicks of course know this better than anybody. Because at the end of a long hot summer, the best of the best and their sidekicks need a break.
The famous sidekicks know what’s what. Robin joined the Teen Titans. Tonto invented the Texas walkabout. Andy tried out sitcoms. And they all discovered it’s good to get away.
Summers can be deceivingly busy times for sidekicks. The heroes want to have fun in the sun, travel to exotic locations and then gear up for the return to their norm. So sidekicks need to fill those hot months with planned activities, keep everyone away from screens and make sure to avoid the mistakes of yesterday as they run out of ideas for tomorrow. We’re all kept on our toes filling in the details, anticipating the fall and just making stuff up when we don’t know what to do next. It can be a little frantic.
But summer sidekicking is also a whole lot of fun. You get a lot of smiles, some enthusiastic conversation and more shouts of joy than you thought possible. Sure, you’re pretty worn down by Labor Day, and then realize there’s another 48 hours before you can get a real break. But it’s worth it because the heroes had a blast, and sidekicks eventually get to catch their breath, sit down and maybe nap before the gears shift and a new season starts up.
Enjoy those ten.
