You were born of Love …
My wife is Madurese, I am white Causcasian. Our daughter has all my features but my wife’s skin colouring. Her family and friends accepted without question, and my associates, many of whom were in inter-racial relationships were even more amenable. It was left to a Chinese Indonesian woman to draw attention to the situation. We were in a hotel lift in Surabaya, East Java, heading for the restaurant. We entered on the eighteenth floor, the Executive level and the elevator stopped at the sixteenth to admit a Chinese family. The Matriach, a heavily powdered old woman with a ludicrous wig, gave my wife a very disapproving glare, then turned her attention on me. I was carrying our daughter who was two years old at the time and the old bat looked me up and down before demanding.
“Is that your child?”
I bit back a sarcastic response and merely answered ‘Yes”
Evidently this wasn’t enough as she continued “Why is she black?”
This time there was no holding back “Why are you ****ing ugly?”
She stiffened visibly and was obviously hunting through her vocabulary for a ‘face saving’ retort when we arrived at the dining room level.
My wife was fuming, but being a typical Javanese Lady, she would not dream of creating a scene in public, unless really pushed, and really pushed she was. I guided her out of the lift and made sure that for the next half hour that sharp knives were not within her reach as she glowered fiercely at the offending harridan.
Our daughter is now fifteen and a stunning Javanese Princess … and whilst shopping in a Mall recently was asked by a Chinese woman “Where she got her nose “done’?”
According to our son her reply was ‘Its my Dad’s”
You have to accept who you are, and those who truly love you will never see anything but the person they love.
