What ever happened to love?
I’ve been confused about religion and the idea of a divine being for most of my life. I would not describe myself as agnostic, nor an atheist, I’m an existentialist. The most simple way I can describe existentialism is “the belief in man and the self”. Religion is defined as: “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.” Using this definition, existentialism does not qualify as a religion, but I think it combines the most beautiful and essential characteristic of every religion: love. All religions speak of love but I cannot think of one positive thing religion has ever done for the world.
The belief in man and the self basically means the belief in belief. I personally believe in myself, I believe in people, and I believe in mankind. I’ve seen love in all sorts of places and it’s made me realise how powerful love is. We’ve all heard heartwarming stories of love triumphing over evil and bringing people together against the odds and I think we take it for granted because it’s just so common. And that may be the most beautiful thing in the world. Love is everywhere, so much so that we are blind to it unless we open our eyes.
