Corbynism without Guarantees

I appreciate the efforts in this article to examine the “motivations” of new Corbyn supporters. I do so in the hope that a sound theoretical understanding of this new populism may offer a better chance for dialog with them. This is in spite of the current form their populism takes that anyone who disagrees doesn’t get it yet (stupid) or worse is a traitor to the disadvantaged, bought with crumbs from the rich man’s table (corrupt). I’ve been called both and worse because I cannot accept either of the premises that the contradictions of capitalism are swollen ripe for an end of days class war in the next decade, nor that in response to the 1% greed a media based social movement can grow to a position of dual power and from thence to state power.

I found the recognition of the roots of the movement in Occupy useful in understanding the short term immediate goal feel of Momentum and also the frenzy of denouncement of doubters, given the way these campaigns were brushed aside. The analysis of personalisation is also useful in both its inherent limitation regarding capitalism and in explaining why a relative cypher such as Mr Corbyn is hailed as a messianic saviour. However Mr Bolton’s analysis while impressive needs more digesting to provide what I need in terms of solutions. As he himself admits it’s hard to make a contribution on commodity fetishism affecting the working class as much as the capitalists while being wheeled on a tumbril from my local CLP.

It would be a help for example to have a further analysis from Mr Bolton on the theoretical errors that led to Gordon Brown’s childlike faith in neo endogenous growth theory or Tony Blair’s rather too successful courtship of the Murdoch press. Why for example did the party under their leadership fail to devolve power to regional assemblies or replace FTPT or the Lords? I do accept that Mr Corbyn is more symbol than substance but isn’t it also true that the professional political class as embodied in the PLP has some humble pie to eat and lessons to learn.

With a both of the current shambles under the spotlight is may be possible to save the party from a victory for either side,
