Detecting dark/night modes is currently being debated by standards committees, and Safari Beta just rolled out support for the ‘prefers-color-scheme’ media query, unfortunately, it’s not supported by other browsers yet, but I believe it is in the works!
Hopefully coming soon to a browser near you!
Yes, I agree, browsers and OSs need to improve on really empowering users to not only manage but also fully understand permissions and the benefits and risks involved. I’m hopeful that with this recent W3C permissions workshop we’re all moving in a positive direction for permissions UX.
Using the API for changing the theme of a website is absolutely fine, great even, but there are more nefarious uses such as collecting data on your browsing habits/times. As is the way with many APIs, sadly.
That’s really great to hear, thank you for understanding for your employees! It’s been good to hear the techniques that others have found work for them. I’m really going to try and remember to allow myself time.
It has really been an eye opener to me how many people from all walks of life have said that they suffer from perfectionism. I think if we talk about it more then we’ll be better able to spot when we’re getting into those negative cycles.
