The Future of Education (Week 1 Reflection; WFE1)

I am an Early Childhood Education graduate and have been teaching for almost ten years. I always keep an eye open for online courses to keep me updated on the new ideas and technologies in teaching. For the record, MOOC’s helped me a whole lot, since I really can’t afford to enroll and physically be in class, which is the norm here in the Philippines, to get “higher learning.”

I, for some reason, always leaned towards progressive learning as my approach to teaching my students. I have observed that they are more enthusiastic in learning new things when the teacher let’s them figure things out for themselves. I, as a teacher, is just there to facilitate the activity and focus it on the lesson to be learned at the end of the day. It is always a beautiful sight when you see your students name the parts of the plant from the garden where they, themselves planted the seeds, watered, and tended.

I know that some schools say that progressive teaching is more expensive than traditional teaching, especially if you work in a country considered as 3rd world like mine. I believe it is just a test on how clever educators can be on how they will execute a lesson.

I expect to learn more about how educators make lessons more of a personalized learning experience for students even when you have a class population of 30 or more students. I know this course will be able to help me find a method of learning and facilitating that is beneficial for all students in my class.
