The Frontrunners of Inter Business are the top tier companies, scoring above the rest when it comes to the skills needed to move beyond sustainability. In an analysis of Sweden’s 50 largest companies, these are the top ten.

The Inter Business Index 2017 is an analysis of the 50 largest corporations in Sweden. Based on published research, the Inter Business Index uses a unique tool, Ibx Insight™, developed to measure and analyze the core skills that indicate a company’s ability to create holistic value.

What does the Inter Business Index say?

Comparability in a complex world. It allows for context neutral comparability, without loosing the complexity a orded by companies’ sustainability efforts.

Measuring towards the future. By measuring and managing the key skills today, there is an indication of a company’s ability to be a force to be reckoned with into the future.

Leading beyond sustainability. It supports longterm decision making, moving beyond sustainability towards holistic value creation.

Comparability in a complex world — Measuring towards the future–Leading beyond sustainability

The four key skills that are measured are:

  • Purpose is the company’s guiding north star, a key to understand value creation in the future.
  • System approach shows the ability to under stand place, interconnectedness, possibilities and responsibility in both local
    and global systems.
  • Empathy represents the ability to feel with all people throughout the valuechain.
  • Transformation is about innovation, learning, resilience and creativity in a rapidly changing world.

The analysis draws on publicly available data and interactions.

KF (a cooperative with main it’s engagement within the FMCG sector) came in as #1, at the very top of the Inter Business Index 2017.

The food industry at the forefront

The food industry is one industry that faces many great challenges ahead, and one of the biggest is to be able to secure access to food for a growing population — and to do so in a sustainable way. And maybe this is the reason why the food industry in particular is stepping up their game.

The businesses within the food industry have by themselves identified a need to go further and are starting to explore what this means. The Inter Business Index indicates that these efforts are slowly paying off, resulting in the ability to deliver holistic value.

In the Inter Business Index 2017 measurement, KF (a cooperative with main it’s engagement within the FMCG sector) and Lantmännen (a farming cooperative and food supplier) are at the very top. This was also the case with the predecessor of Inter Business Index (Human Centered Business Index 2016), where both Polarbröd and Saltå Kvarn were presented as frontrunners.

To have the developed ability — as many of the companies in the food industry do — to see and understand the connection between human and human relationships and the surrounding systems, gives an advantage when it come to thinking about the business in a future context. We believe that this insight has been a key for the food industry to make the connections that moves them forward.

The Inter Business framework is built on extensive qualitative research, resulting in not only the Index itself, but also a sound methodology for the framework that have been published in Journal of Management and Sustainability and European Social Innovations Review.

The Inter Business Index is presented by us, Inter Business Initiative, and Ibx, who offers tools to measure and manage, as well as insights on, business beyond sustainability.
