Does the memory come first or the earworm?

Lately the song “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” has been playing in my head. Particularly the lyrics…

“Maybe mother told you true
And they’re always be something there for you
And you’ll never be alone
But maybe she’s wrong
And Maybe I’m right”

I suspect it’s because of Christmas. Thoughts of being together with family, friends, loved ones. During this time there’s always a lack. The reality of your lack, whatever it may be, becomes more apparent. And so the lyrics play. Maybe there is something there…


I have a friend obsessed with bargain hunting. This friend may not need what is on sale but if the deal is attractive enough the purchase will be made — no ifs ands or buts.

What is going on here?

There is a type of thinking at play here I can’t quite put my finger on. I admit a similar variation when I go to McDonald’s. Instead of choosing the food items I prefer, I have in the back of my head a funny calculation taking place.

The reasoning goes…

“What food item would make this corporation the least money…
