Why You Should Find A Mentor, Starting Today
After reading a book called Total Recall by Arnold Schwarzenegger I got myself thinking about all the life lessons he shared in the book. One of the most important ones was to think big. It was something that Arnold prioritized a lot and is also one of the reasons why he was such a successful person. Just in case you don’t know what this guy did, let me point it out:
7 Time Mr Olympia (Worlds Best Bodybuilder for seven years)
Highest paid actor in the 80s/90s
Became a multimillionaire before the age of 30 by buying real estate
Married into the Kennedy bloodline
Governor of California (two times)
So basically he is an Austrian-American actor, filmmaker, businessman, investor, author, philanthropist, activist, former professional bodybuilder and former politician.
“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”
This guy has literally done it all, achieved massive success is more than just one field and written his name in the history books as one of the greatest men who ever lived. How did he do it? How was it possible for him? That’s the question that has been running in my mind lately. Sure, he had work ethic, willpower, brains, courage and much more, but how did he develop all that? That’s the big question. How can we be like him? What must we do? What books should we read? Who’s advice should we take?
The more I think about, the best answer I can come up with that would change the lives of any man or woman and make them one of the greatest persons who ever lived, is having mentors. I believementors are one of the most important things that we could have. It does not matter whether we’re Arnold, Muhammad Ali, Steve Jobs or any of these great people right away. It does not matter at all, because all this can be developed by putting ourselves into the right kind of environment, letting the right information in and learning from the people who we want to be like. Anybody has the capacity to change and become the next Arnold, IF they get the right kind of direction. This is where mentors come in, since their teachings, their influence will literally change the person’s world view, who’s listening.
This is what’s wrong in the world. This is why it’s so easy to feel lost. The lack of mentors. Who do we have guiding our way? You have to go out and find people who have done it before, learn from them and then apply it. They can shorten the path so that we would not have to fail so much. Learn from mistakes, they do not all have to be yours.
Now we get to the second part. Having mentors is one thing, but what’s the point of having them if we do not listen or take their advice? None. For them it’s like talking to a wall. Point being — we have to be open-minded and not judge the information right away. Conviction is the enemy of truth. Once we have developed a view on something, we cannot see it from a neutral point of view, because we’re buyest to the outcome. Be open-minded and don’t let the convictions, rumors or anything else shape your own judgement. Once we understand that all information is neutral and it’s up to us whether we want to believe it or not, we’re able to do great things with our life.
In conclusion, two things to remember from this article:
Find Mentors (real life people, books etc.)
Be Open-Minded and listen without instant conviction
