Capitalism as we know it rests in several simplistic assumptions that only work when human action is trivial against the scale of the World environment. We can no longer dismiss as uncosted “externalities” the destruction associated with traditional creation of “wealth”.

Increased ecological pressure has brought into sharp focus the extent to which the evanescent benefits of “wealth” come through destruction of real wealth: that of the environment that supports all life including ours, and the wealth of community and culture that define who we are as human beings.

Capitalism is adapting to a degree to this new paradigm of scale but its inherent assumptions and conceptual shortcuts mean that it unlikely to be able to adapt sufficiently and must give way to new forms of organisation better fitted to our emerging reality.
