Thrilled that you broke your self-imposed embargo!

Well said. Decades ago, when I worked for a large corporation, we had an annual contest involving our travel experiences. To win, we had to prove that we either ate in the tackiest restaurant or stayed in the tackiest hotel, as voted on by all of our traveling co-workers. Our boss won one year. He stayed in a hotel which displayed their old bed sheets for sale in the lobby. He bought a set. They were as disgusting as you could imagine. It was a good way to instill a culture of humility over hubris — an attitude that has stayed with me in my own business.

Of course, we never want to sacrifice personal safety for the sake of a few pennies of travel budget. My personal rule is to never stay at a “cheap” hotel — the kind with bullet proof windows at the check-in desk. But, being safe does not entitle you to five star treatment on someone else’s nickel.
