Burnage was a prosperous village in the late 19th century. Its location on the periphery of Manchester attracted wealthy industrialists and merchants from the city, who settled alongside the local farmers and agricultural workers.

The photograph was taken on Moorton Avenue in Burnage, behind the Congregational Church on Burnage Lane.
