Legendary: Game of Heroes’ current event, “The Devil’s Deal,” tells the story of Skullcrush, a heavy metal band that wanted more than the mortal world could offer. Their wants were more demonic in nature, so they turned to Thrall, Nukegood. Thrall is the conduit between the music industry and Hell, of course. He used his hellish powers to give Skullcrush all the rock and roll prowess the desired. Sounds pretty metal, right? In fact, everything about this event is metal; the relic is a multi-neck electric guitar. If all this metal has left you wanting more, then check out this list of Top 7 Most Heavy Metal Games.

7. Twisted Metal 2

This is the only game on the list to feature the world “metal” in the title, and it earns it. Twisted Metal 2, and the first game in the series, Twisted Metal, are demolition derby vehicular combat games. The game takes place many years ago, in 2006, after an apocalypse changed the world. Fourteen of the best drivers in the world are ready for the next Twisted Metal, a tournament hosted once a year. This tournament is hosted by Calypso, a suicidal stuntman who upon his death, was sent to hell, escaped, and return to our world with magic powers.

6. Shadows of the Damned

Shadows of the Damned was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture in 2011. The game mostly takes places in hell, as Garcia Hotspur, a Mexican demon hunter, searches for the City of Damned. It’s there he hopes to save his girlfriend who has been kidnapped by the Lord of Demons. Garcia relies on his trusty demon sidekick, Johnson, who takes the form of various phallic guns. Shadows of the Damned was a collaboration between Suda51 (No More Heroes) and Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil), both incredibly metal dudes.

5. Brutal Legend

You may not know it, but real time strategy is extremely metal. Brutal Legend, developed by Double Fine and starring Jack Black, was released in 2009. It centers around a roadie who magically gets sent to a heavy metal fantasy world. The roadie, named Eddie Riggs, is voiced by real life rockstar and actor, Jack Black. He becomes the rock and roll savior of the world thanks his Flying V guitar and battle axe. If that wasn’t enough metal for you, then you’ll be pleased to know the game boasts a very metal voice cast with stars like Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, and Lita Ford of the Runaways.

4. Darksiders

There’s no heavy metal like biblical heavy metal. Darksiders allows gamers to take on the role of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War, Strife, Fury, and Death, are the last of the Nephlim, angel/demon hybrids. The apocalypse has taken place, and Earth has been destroyed. It’s up to War to figure out who or what caused Earth’s destruction. Darksiders was released in the 2010 as a hack and slash RPG. Darksiders 2 came out in 2012 as a parallel sequel, telling the story of Death. The third installment is slated for 2018 and will tell the parallel story of Fury, sister to War, Death, and Strife. The game is full of imagery from the Book of Revelation, the most metal book of the Bible.

3. DOOM

DOOM was first released in 1993, but has since been re-released a handful of times, including Doom VR in 2017. The first-person shooter takes place in space, or more specifically Mars, the most metal planet (the planet with the most actual metal is Mercury). Gamers take on the role of a space marine in a UAC compound. He fights off hordes of demons and undead as they take over the facility. Turns out the power of Hell is invading, and it’s up to him, and his Praetor Suit, to take them on. DO has sold over 10 million copies. Success is metal.

2. Bloodbourne

Let’s start out by saying all of From Software’s games are metal as hell. Demon Souls and both Dark Souls are amazing games, and are worth playing, and dying repeatedly. Bloordbourne, however, is the “metalist.” It takes places in Yharnam, a crumbling gothic city obsessed with blood. Something happens that transforms the people of the city into grotesque beasts. In order to cure the people, the player must defeat the various monsters in the city. There’s a lot of blood.

  1. Diablo 2

Diablo 2, like the other games in the Diablo series, is a dark fantasy horror RPG. That sentence right there is pretty metal. Released in 2000, Diablo 2 lets gamers play as one of five classes including a Necromancer and a Sorceress. The story of Diablo 2 picks up after the events of Diablo 1. The hero of the last game defeated Diablo by absorbing his soul to contain him. Diablo’s soul began to corrupt the hero as evil has begun returning to the world of Sanctuary, wreaking havoc on its citizens. Eventually you realize Diablo isn’t the only bad, he has two equally demonic brothers, Mephisto and Baal. It’s up to the player to stop the forces of The Burning Hell. Metal!
