4 Sci-Fi & Fantasy Book Recommendations

Need a new Sci-Fi or Fantasy book to read? Here are a few that you may like.

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie

A nearly perfect work of fantasy. Combining the brutality of George R.R. Martin with the grandeur of Tolkien, this novel tells a flawed hero’s journey and does it in only 275 pages. Lots of twists and unexpected reveals. I can’t wait to dive into book two, which was just released.

The Just City by Jo Walton

Athena and Apollo set up Plato’s Republic to see if it will actually work. They attempt to experience it as mortals to learn about volition, freedom of choice and justice. Throw in robots from the future, time travel and Sokrates showing up midway through the book to cause trouble and you have a story that is both thought provoking and inspiring.

Evensong by John Love

Set in 2060, Evensong is a fast paced, sci-fi thriller featuring a biologically enhanced secret operative of the UN on a simple bodyguard mission. This book features all of the action and political intrigue that you’d expect but it also asks deeper questions regarding identity, gender and morality.

Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Amazon had the first seven Dresden novels as the Kindle Daily Deal a few months ago. At $1.99 per book, I couldn’t resist buying them all. The book was exactly what I thought it would be; a wizard detective in Chicago solving mysteries… and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dark and funny. Do yourself a favor and pick up the audio book, narrated by James Marsters.
