The Meaning of Flowers

Flowers have been symbols of different things over the years. We use them in celebrations, we use them in commemorations, and we even eat some of them. It really is amazing how practical flowers can be and how much joy they bring into our lives. I mean, I don’t know a person who hates flowers, except a few people with allergies.

So, let’s dig a little deeper into the symbolism of some blooming floral species. It is good to know some facts about flowers, in order to avoid embarrassing situations, so continue reading.

You all know that red roses are a symbol of love, desire and passion. But do you know that purple roses stand for enchantment and love at first sight? Or that yellow roses mean friendship? Yep, don’t give yellow roses to your beloved one on St. Valentine’s, because they are not a sign for love. In Victorian times, they were even considered a sign for jealousy.

Black roses are pretty eccentric gifts, and some might consider them beautiful and they are. But it is not considered a good sign to give a black rose. These flowers are considered for symbols of omens, death and fixed ideas. Don’t give a black rose to a girl!

Lotus flowers are magnificent plants. They grow in muddy water and only their blooms are above the water. Lotuses are very interesting as their blooms close at night and sink in water, and once the sun rises they appear on the surface again. They are symbols of long life, honour, good luck, purity of mind and heart, and health. It is not a coincidence that Buddha is always drawn sitting on a lotus flower in old Buddhist books.

Daisies are small white flowers which open during the day and close at night. Their name originates from the Anglo Saxon “daes eage” or “day’s eye”. You can think of the reason for this name by yourselves I guess. Old Romans and Celtics have considered daises for a symbol of innocence. Celtics believed that Bellis flowers come from the souls of babies who died at birth and who want to seize the grief of their parents.

Azalea flowers are the Chinese symbols of womanhood. They are also symbols of temperance and fragile passion. Some believe that by giving azalea flowers to someone you tell him to take care of himself for you.

Chrysanthemums are beautiful flowers in different colours. There are red, yellow and white chrysanthemums and they all stand for different things. Reds mean love, whites are truth and yellow chrysanthemums are slighted love. I hope you don’t have to give yellow chrysanthemums to someone.

Daffodils are pretty awesome by meaning. They stand for regard and unrequited love, but by giving someone a bouquet of daffodils you tell him/her that he/she is the only one for you. You actually state that the sun will always shine as long as you are with him/her. Isn’t it awesome?!

Lily of the valley is a symbol of humility and sweetness. But when you give it to a woman, you actually tell her that she completes you. Lily flowers are very tender and beautiful.

Flowers and symbolism are great, but we shouldn’t be afraid by their symbolic meanings. The information above is only shared for your information, don’t stop giving flowers to your favourite women. And if you want to make them even happier and to impress them, learn how to grow flowers. A garden in your backyard will definitely make you famous among the women in your neighbourhood, so don’t be afraid to call yourself a gardener.
