Should Animals Have a Right to Privacy?
Brandon Keim

The question of whether live animals have a right to privacy is intriguing. But to say, as the NJ Dept. of Ag. did, that a DEAD wild dolphin has a right to medical privacy is so ridiculous as to be laughable. I suspect they had other reasons for denying the FOI request. I once interviewed a USDA veterinarian for a book. He had performed a necropsy (autopsy on an animal) on a cow that had been diagnosed with mad cow disease. He did not suggest that the dead cow had a right to privacy. As a journalist, I interviewed a Fish and Wildlife Service veterinarian about a necropsy on wolf that had been shot in Idaho. He didn’t suggest that the dead wolf had a right to privacy.
