It is used a great deal in competitive sport, where huge changes are unlikely to happen but, with careful analyses and focus on small areas where minor tweaks can improve time, performance, scores, etc., the cumulative effect of all those tiny changes can be quite startling. The Sky Sports cycling team and the England rugby side demonstrated this really well in the early 2010s , but it is increasingly hard to maintain a lead as the England XV demonstrated this year.
