The “enthusiastic consumer” is the most valuable asset in business. Populations of enthusiastic consumers always include some who have extra money that they like to spend towards their passions. And lest anyone think the “product” has to be too fancy, I would remind you of the money people spend on trinkets for WeChat, ringtones for phones, etc. The lack of revenue at Medium is an unexpected failure of imagination, since Medium could even be a commerce platform for things like digital books.
