Henri Matisse painting

“Color helps to express light—not the physical phenomenon, but the only light that really exists, that is in the artist’s brain” this quote was made by Henry Matisse who is a french visual artist.

Imagine if the universe was devoid of colours and everything is….bleak without an iota of emotion expression (oh the horror!!). Colours really play an important role in our lives, it is the determinant for things we consider beautiful or ugly. Let me ask you a question, when was the last time you looked at something and was like “awww, that’s so cute” or looked at another thing and was like “ewww, that’s looks disgusting”? 9 out of 10 it has to do with colours, a white fluffy looking petite dog with the most adorable blue eyes you have ever looked seen, now that will make your heart melt in an instant.

Colour is a visual communication of our emotion, it is another form of expression after speech. It creates a particular emotion or set a particular mood, which most businesses take advantage of. This is the reason we all see companies with various colours, each trying to communicate visually what they want us the audience to feel.

That being said, it is important to understand what each colour is trying to convey emotionally. We will be diving a little bit into the amazing world of colours. But for today, we will only discuss on the three primary colours.

Red

Red is the most attention grabbing colour of all the colours. The reason for this is that, it is the first colour that is visible to us humans first before any other colour. The emotions behind the colour red are; action, passion, energy and power.

Blue

Blue is a very popular colour used especially in on most business brands. This this because the emotions behind the colour blue are; calmness, trust, organized, non-confrontational.

Green

Green is another used colour, mostly seen on health related brands. This is because green symbolizes; health, growth, nature, rebirth.

It is important to know that colour meaning differ from country to country, white may be seen as a symbol of peace in the west, however in the some parts of the world, it is used when celebrating the dead. Colours play a role in how cultures see and interpret colours and it is good to know these interpretation to avoid giving off the wrong message.
