One thing to consider with a dark nighttime scene is that the OLED screens have a technical issue that gives “black smear” when you have a lot of solid black pixels, and it an hurt the visual quality. I suggest you to aim for evening or twilight instead of nighttime.

Pedantic, but I think you mean “fading in and out is ok here and there” — a “crossfade” is a simultaneous blend between two scenes, rather than between a scene and a solid color, then back to a scene, and probably never a good idea in VR.
