Cut the bullshit: organizations with no hierarchy don’t exist
Francesca Pick

You can run organisations without hierarchy. It is possible. Hierarchy, literally “rule by the priests” is based upon fixed structures of superiority and inferiority, dualisms which separate people into different exclusive categories, which are built around an act of violence as they fail to recognise and devalue people in intermediary position (eg. either with/or against etc). Hierarchy fails to recognise we are equal in our humanity, and creates a “win/lose” zero sum game, that all too often becomes a “negative sum” lose/lose game. Rather than fixed hierarchy we need flexible heterarchy, recognition that we are equally unique and different, and that a win-win positive sum game is possible. We find heterarchies through nature, hierarchies have existed only in less than 2% of human existence on Earth.
