Use the Best Sources
Your first step is outreach. Don’t put bad candidates into the beginning of your process and expect a great hire on the other side. The best sources of strong candidates are, in order:
1. Former colleagues and friends
2. Referrals, especially if from 2+ people
4. Specialist job boards, e.g. Hacker News, Stack Overflow
5. Recruiters, traditionally the weakest source
A great benefit of this method is that it allows you to say you “did everything you could” while avoiding the tedious annoyance of having to deal with people not exactly like you! It’s a sweet diversity glaze without any of that pesky substance!
