We got a new office

We got a new office at work and it’s pretty big. Long, really. It’s a big long rectangle. That’s it. It’s a humongous seven thousand square foot long rectangle. They built a couple of conference rooms out of drywall and there’s a kitchen and men’s and women’s restrooms. But other than that it’s a giant rectangle.

It’s directly across the street from the jail. It’s called the Justice Center but that’s what it is, a jail. There are these really wide skinny windows that I think are at the tops of the cells. Some of them have gibberish written on the inside of them. Pleas for help or maybe todo lists.

The office is conveniently close to many things, like coffee shops and bail bondsmen. Sometimes when I am walking to get my almond vanilla latte I will admire the people who are buying bratwurst from a hotdog cart at 9am. Extra peppers and onions, I hear.

The office is on the fifth floor, which means there are 8 flights of stairs to get there, 2 per floor. I often walk them, and am pretty hot when I get to five. The door opens to the frigid chill of our workspace. Someone on the team must be a vampire or otherwise undead because the thermostat is always set to hypothermic levels. I never bother with it; I complain regularly to no one in particular.

Maybe I haven’t done our new office justice. It is gorgeous. It has rich hardwood floors, giant windows, tons of natural light, the buoyant feeling of history. The other tenants involve a host of successful startups, architects, an accelerator. Next to the jail is the casino. Each one feeding the other in an endless succession of capitalistic byproduct.

I love the new office. I do.
