Preemergence herbicides are one of the most effective options for preventing weeds from competing with desirable grass species on lawns. Turf lawns are exposed to weed seeds that often lay dormant on the soil surface until they get enough sunlight and moisture to germinate.

Essentially, preemergence herbicides work by destroying the seeds or chemically modifying the young roots of weeds so they become unable to grow, even in the presence of the conditions for germination. These herbicides efficiently control crabgrass, annual bluegrass, and some annual broadleaf weeds.

Granular and liquid spray are the two major forms of preemergence herbicides. To begin action, preemergence herbicides typically require about one-half inch of irrigation water following application. These herbicides typically remain effective for six to 12 weeks.
