What started as a Kickstarter campaign back in June 2018 by Daniel Quasar has become a movement to shift the LGBTQ+ spotlight on the under-represented trans, people of color, and HIV/AIDS communities.

The campaign, which was 100% funded in 3 days, reached an overall audience of 508 backers pledging $25,082. The original goal was only $14,000. This speaks volumes for the demand within the community to bring more attention to our marginalized groups.

The new design borrows from both the Philadelphia pride flag and the trans pride flag, with the addition of black and brown stripes and white, light pink, and light blue stripes, respectively. The design uses a chevron emerging from the left-hand side which separates the new colors from the traditional 6-color flag.

The 6 stripe LGBTQ flag should be separated from the newer stripes because of their difference in meaning, as well as to shift focus and emphasis to what is important in our current community climate. — Daniel Quasar

The meaning and focus are all about the marginalized groups within the LGBTQ+ community.

The trans flag stripes and marginalized community stripes were shifted to the Hoist of the flag and given a new chevron shape. The arrow points to the right to show forward movement while being along the left edge shows that progress still needs to be made. — Daniel Quasar

While many can identify the trans community and POC community colors, many may not know that the black stripes also represent those living with HIV/AIDS. The hoist consists of “5 half-sized stripes representing trans and non-binary individuals (light blue, light pink, white), marginalized POC communities (brown, black), as well as those living with AIDS and the stigma and prejudice surrounding them, and those who have been lost to the disease (black)”.
